Gift Tip #38: Handyman (or woman) services

This may not seem like a romantic gift but it may save spouses some time arguing about the leaky faucet or what weekend is going to be deemed "house project" weekend, which always seems to fall on the hottest/coldest/rainiest day of the year. Instead of creating a lovers quarrel, hire someone to come in and fix all your housing needs.

We all have a "honey do" list, whether you have a honey or not, and it seems to just grow and grow! This gift would be a great one for your spouse or single not-so-handy girlfriend, brother, cousin, etc.

Just remember this might free up your weekend to go have fun instead of helping them remove drywall...let's leave that to the professionals!

Speaking of professionals, its best to get referrals, especially when using contractors or the like so check with friends, the Better Business Bureau and/or Angie's list where consumers rate contractors, service companies and doctors right in their own neighborhoods.

Be Thankful

Thanksgiving is this week and I have always loved the tradition I have with my family (back in Maryland) and my Charlotte family (thanks to the Scott family) of each person in the room saying what they are thankful for right before blessing the food on Thanksgiving Day.

I hope that each of you will take a moment today (why wait to Thanksgiving?!?) and think about what you are thankful for. Today I am thankful for things big and small:

Real friends are the "cherry on top"

A day off work to relax, rejuvenate and reflect

The arrival of my favorite magazines in my mailbox

A manicure and a pedicure

What are you thankful for today?

Gift Tip: 37: Go VIP while partying

Maybe it's a special someone's birthday or you just haven't been out in a while and you want to party in style. You should consider purchasing a table/lounge area for the evening. It can make for a much more pleasurable evening. My top three reasons why:

  1. It let's you rest your feet! Ladies, I know you sometimes where the sexy, sky high heels and around midnight you need to rest your tootsies. Rest em' VIP style.

  2. It's so much easier to get drinks because you usually have a waitress assigned to your table/couch/etc that comes by to take your order. (sidenote: Don't forget to tip!)

  3. You have a ready-made dance floor. You can dance around (or on) your table all night.

But seriously, not every night needs to be a "get a table" night but why not break the monotony for that 30th birthday party or "I got a promotion" celebration? I am sure it will be a night of fun and foolery!

Gift Tip #36: In-home wine tasting

Hosting an in-home wine tasting can be a gift to all attendees and makes for a special evening. The tasting can be a stand alone event or one that accompanies other festivities such as an upcoming holiday party, dinner party, girls night in or another event that would be appropriate.

There are local wine companies that would be willing to come to your residence (or another space) and share with you private label wines from syrahs to dessert wines (everyone is in love with Moscato right now, I even heard it in a rap song but that's a whole different blog post!).
In addition, if you happen to love a wine, the on site wine consultant will usually have bottles for purchase or be willing to take orders and have the items delivered or shipped to your home. PRP International is a great wine company whose mission is to provide consistently top quality products to their clients. They also have a satisfaction guaranteed policy so get the bottles poppin' with an in-home wine tasting. Your guests (aka giftees) will be pleased, guaranteed!

The Spotlight: Dessert Specialists

Dessert Specialists is small operation with big ideas and tasty chocolates. The business has speciality desserts such as cakes, cookies and of course chocolates that are simply delicious! If you have ever spoken with co-owner Sadruddin Abdullah you can tell how passionate he is about his business. Having appeared on The Food Network, received many awards and currently teaching at Johnson & Wales University under the schools' culinary arts program, Abdullah backs up his passion with experience. As a part of the dessert experience, Dessert Specialists offer a chocolate of the month club, chocolate and wine pairing experience (this item was very popular at the PRSA Awards event!) and much more!

Straight from the horse's mouth (Dessert Specialist's website)
It is our goal to create unique and innovative dessert experiences for our customers. It is our promise to exceed your expectations with every bite. We quickly learned that you cannot make great food with mediocre ingredients. Therefore, we are committed to using the finest ingredients in the world. For example, we only use the finest European chocolate.
We are equally committed to the artisan techniques of our craft. All of our chocolates are made by hand, we don’t maintain large inventories of product, and we customize our products just for you. We will never be the biggest specialty dessert company, but we will always be the best.

Gift #35: Upgrade a dinner and a show

I am excited to start sharing the top experiences bidded on at the PRSA Chapter Awards Celebration so you can use for your own gifting experiences. The next few posts will share these experiences...

First up....I love a good dinner and a show but doesn't it seem mundane...like everyone is doing that?! Here's a tip on how to upgrade the dinner and a show (really any kind of show from The Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall in NYC to On Q Productions at Sprit Square in NC): instead of driving you and your wife/date/lust of the night to your favorite restaurant and performance hire a car service. It really does elevate the evening plus you and your significant other can enjoy bubbly with reckless abandon:)

This gift would be perfect for a birthday, wedding anniversary or some other celebration...and of course it would be very impressive if there wasn't an occassion at all and you just wanted to step out of the norm, I'm just sayin! There are plenty of car services that can be found in your area. Here in Charlotte there is Alto Transportation, Rose Transportation and many others. If you don't want to blindly pick a car service, call a local hotel and ask to speak to the concierge, they can make great rcommendations.

Don't forget to make this experience A Night to Remember.
