The Spotlight: isme (Sponsored Post)

isme, an online home shopping catalogue based in the UK carries a wide range of products including clothes, electronics, toys and even beauty items. One stop shop, anyone? I'd say so!
isme reps encouraged me to check out their maxi dresses--and we aren't just talking simple "beach destination" maxi dresses either...think day to night and a little something in between. Maxi dresses could be a great gift for your bestie as you prepare for your last beach trip of the summer...or perhaps a simple "just because" gift for you. Maybe you'd love to wear an evening maxi dress for a night out on the town or you can throw one of the casual versions on to run your daily errands. The dresses come in various colors, prints and range from sizes 6-28. I have picked out a few of my faves:

Savoir Confident Curves Maxi Dress

South Petite Pull On Maxi Dress

Teatro Embellished Maxi Dress

The Spotlight: Nidasii

Nidasii bath and body care company began organically (rightfully so since the ingredients are all natural) in 2004 by Nicole Perkins, a cutie pie who currently lives in Harlem. The company name is actually made up of her name and the names of her two sisters, Danya and Sica (nickname). The product line includes sugar butter scrubs, body butter and sugar rush scrubs. I got the chance to try out the mango-go body butter (Thanks, Nicole!) and while there are alot of body butters on the market, this one seemed different. Maybe it was the whipped texture, being chemically-free or just the love that went into the packaging. The packaging is simple but impactful and includes the tagline: experience beauty naturally. I could see it catching the eye of many ladies in a cute boutique or store.
Nicole's desire to create such products came from her being a self-proclaimed beauty product junkie and a specific need--she had chronic eczema as a child and she needed a product to help her dry skin. Growing up, she would purchase various products and mix them together to create the right consistency and moisture level for her skin. Finally, she began creating her own products for personal use but it was when others began asking for the products that the company was born.
Nicole shared with me that creating each product was trail and error and she likes to source the best ingredients. For her, quality is key. She is open to expanding her line and is currently looking for boutiques to carry her body butter and scrubs. Right now, all her products can be found online and today is the launch of the Nidasii Beauty Concierge where Manhattan residents can have products delivered to you wherever you are (i.e. gym, home, work, etc) during the month of June!

Fun facts about Nidasii:
  • Nidasii's products are multifunctional--Nicole uses the body butter products to moisturize her hair and the sugar rush scrubs can be used to cleanse and exfoliate.
  • The company name is not only made up of each sister's name/nickname, it also goes in chronological order of their birth.
  • In the beginning, Nicole researched ways to create products with everyday food grade products found in her kitchen cabinets.
  • Nicole knew she had a “passionate obsession”when all her free time was spent in front of the computer researching recipes and ingredients.

The Spotlight: The Boulevard at South End

Some Charlotteans may remember this unique store from its NoDa days (where it was originally located) and I must tell you when I heard that it was closing, I had shoppers withdrawal! But alas, the shop popped up in the South End neighborhood and my shopping withdrawals were over. Yay!

The Boulevard at South End is a gift boutique featuring handmade works of over 20 local artists. In the space, you will find beautiful cards, jewelry, pet toys and just for the guys: a man cave section featuring cool t-shirts and more. The store prides itself in sharing handmade, local and affordable items for everyone. Upon visiting, this one stop gift shop you can find something interesting at every turn! Here are a few items that caught my eye on one of my recent visits:
Abibi Apron
What a chic accessory to wear while making dinner
Keep Calm Poster
The Blvd has many variations of this poster but this is one of my faves
Lotus Rouge Eye Pillow
A great way to rest those weary eyes
Meow & Fetch college sports team leashes
Just another way to show everyone who you (and your pooch) root for
"Honey Bunny" Kee-la Onesie
How cute is this onesie! Enough said.

K Stationary box
When you feel that texting and emailing has taken over your friendships send a note instead
Zanie's dog toys
Soft and sometimes noisy toys to keep your animals happy

The Spotlight: FABO

FABO (Fabulous Art Buying Opportunity) is a spot like no other in Charlotte. Located on Selwyn Avenue, this shop works with local artists to sell their artwork, handmade pottery, jewelry and more. In addition, FABO sells coffee, tea, wine, bite size snacks and more. FABO is not only a coffee shop (for lack of a better word) but also a gallery of sorts showcasing the work of local artists, all of which are are for sale. While sipping your cafe mocha or picking at your snickerdoodle cookie, you are immersed in the creativity that fills the room.
Owner, Amy Aussieker always loved artwork and traditional galleries but says her idea for FABO came about when she had a hard time affording those pieces in traditional art galleries. "There are so many fabulous artists that don't have the resume to get into some of the bigger galleries but they have wonderful affordable artwork" said Aussieker. Currently she is featuring approximately 20 artists with varied styles and techniques. "One of my favorite parts of my job is when I get to call a new artist and tell them one of their pieces sold" said Aussieker.
Amy also enjoys chatting with customers as they peruse artwork, stroll in for a meeting or grab a cup of  joe. "I feel like I am constantly hosting a party" Aussieker gushed about her loyal customers.
Speaking of parties, FABO will be having one this Sunday and it is sure to be a treat. It's the FABO's Fabulous Under $50.00 Shopping Event taking place this Sunday, December 4th from 3-6pm. Several artists will be on site while you check out their wares...and of course there will be wine samples and specials. Here is a sample of items you may see on Sunday:
This is a great time to pick up a Christmas gift for someone special, but before picking up anything be sure to remember the giftee's personal style. Also, keep their home design in mind too...if they are traditional you don't want to go with a modern piece. If you pick the right piece of artwork, the giftee should know exactly where to put the item in their home once they open the present, it should mesh with their style very easily. In addition to artwork other items will be apart of this shopping bonanza including jewelry, ornaments, coffee and more.

The Spotlight: Laura James Jewelry

Laura James of  laura james jewelry is not only a talented designer of bracelets, necklaces, rings and everything in between she is one of the sweetest people I have interviewed for HoneeBee Gifts. James, who provides jewelry to television and movie sets, whose work has been featured in national publications such as People StyleWatch says that she "just wants to make people smile". Her one of a kind jewelry does just that!
Growing up, Laura was inspired by her aunt (an artist herself) and her Dad, who at an early age took her to gem & mineral shows in their hometown. It was going to these shows that peaked her interest in fine gems and stones and you can see the inspiration in her work. At 10 years old, she would use her fathers tools to take apart jewelry and create something new.
Her inspiration comes from traveling, nature, European fashion and Barneys NYC.When she's not feeling inspired she will work on her craft in another way, by studying trends. From our conversation, she seems to be such a go-getter with a streak of adventure. For example, she and two girlfriends  would always take trips together and on a whim they decided to choose between three cities to live in for a few years and "move on". Well--the city that won out was Charlotte...then unexpectedly she and her friends met their husbands here and Charlotte got lucky with having a talent like Laura in its midst for longer that she and her friends expected.
Laura began her business in 2005 and opened a brick & mortar store in 2009. The store allows for more accessibility for Charlotte dwellers--and comes with a few other perks such as stopping in and seeing the artist at work. What a luxury! James loves having input from her customers and I know alot of giftees who would enjoy having a handmade, one of a kind piece from a world-renowned artisan. A gift from James is something that can be passed down through many generations. It can also be a piece that you (or your giftee) wears every day or on special occasions. Laura James has something for everyone in her store--and if she doesn't have it, she can create it, sharing that some customers come in with magazine pieces or want to merge some of her already designed pieces and she happily obliges.
Some of her top selling pieces include the sideway cross necklace, cuff bracelets, adjustable cocktail rings and stud earrings.  For this season, Laura sees all metal jewelry, fringe and statement necklaces taking center stage. She just debuted her vintage couture collection and is working on an artisan collection, where other artisans will come together and she will sell some of their pieces in her store. The store also provides items to store your jewelry and origami hand stamped enclosure cards. This is a great idea, making Laura James Jewelry a one stop shop. It also allows your gift to stay on theme by purchasing packaging with the same "feel" as the jewelry. Stop in to laura james jewelry today and let me know what you think!

Bzzzz: If you sign up to be on their email list, you will be alerted of their Chic Sprint Sale, where once a month select jewelry is up for grabs at 50% off!

The Spotlight: Shecky's Girls Night Out

When a friend invited me to Shecky's Girls Night Out I was so excited...and happy to hear that Charlotte "made it" as one of Shecky's selected cities. In addition, I thought this would be a great event to highlight for HoneeBee. What girlfriend wouldn't want a ticket (not to mention a coveted goodie bag) to one of the most fun events around? Such a great gift and bonding experience for friends, right in our own backyard!

My first Shecky's experience was driving to Atlanta to check out this fab event. HoneeBee was pretty new and I thought the event would give me great gift ideas, not to mention inspiration to keep the blog going. I had a great time...from the variety of vendors and items for purchase, free drinks and jam-packed goodie bag. I have high hopes that Charlotte's event will be similar...or even better!

With this being the 10th anniversary I have been assured from Cait, Shecky's Content Manager that they will continue with these traditions but add in special deals, sweepstakes and more to celebrate ten years of bringing girlfriends together for good ole' fashioned fun! At the Charlotte event be on the lookout for local artisans to nationally-recognized brands selling everything from accessories to beauty products to shoes!

When I asked Cait how often Shecky's comes to town, she said "sometimes it's once year, sometimes more than once or seasonally...it all depends and varies by year, which is always fun." I definitely want Shecky's to come to Charlotte more often than not so be sure to get your ticket and check out the event this Wednesday, June 8th at The Big Chill from 5pm-10pm. The Big Chill is located on 911 E. Morehead Street (S. McDowell St). When you purchase a ticket, Shecky's will donate $5 to The American Red Cross disaster relief efforts for the southern region of the country.

Also be sure to follow me on twitter as I will be tweeting live from the event! Following the event I will share the contents of my Shecky's Goodie Bag.

If you happen to see me at the event, stop me and say hello--but only if you have time between QT time with girlfriends, sipping your delicious drink and picking out your next gift!

Shecky's Facts

  • Shecky's has executed events in 15 cities--this is the first year in Charlotte after getting ALOT of suggestions to come via their "Submit Your City" option on their website. Ahhh, the power of the people!

  • Shecky's started off as a small publishing company that faced closing its doors after the tradegy of 9-11 and decided to throw a party to lift the spirits in NYC post-September and save their company?

  • Shecky's first event in Los Angeles sold out in 10 days.

  • 800 people showed up to their first event in NYC. They expected 300-400 and their CEO wound up pouring drinks behind the bar to help with the demand.

The Spotlight: Flex + Fit

One normal day in Uptown I was driving along and saw an unassuming sign about Flex + Fit but under the sign is what caught my eye. It included some of the services the company would provide...yoga and cooking classes, you say? Not to take anything away from Charlotte but with a place like this I was wondering if I was still in it. Flex + Fit sounded so interesting and different-I was immediately intrigued.

After connecting with owner Shama Patel, I found out a few tidbits that made me fall in love with the place even more...so much so that I had to share with HoneeBee followers even though the place doesn't open until May, which is not normally my style but don't worry I will let you know when the grand opening is and give you a few gift ideas in the meantime.

Telling you that Flex + Fit (FF) is a health club doesn't do it justice. Yes, FF will have four studios where various exercise classes will take place including air yoga (where you can hang from hammocks...yes hammocks!) and spin classes where there will be large theatre screens projecting images that allow you to feel like you are literally moving in the studio. As Patel told me one of the images "feels like you are riding through the hills of Hawaii". Personal training sessions are also available. Now don't forget I mentioned cooking! In addition to the fitness studios, FF will host cooking kitchens where local chefs show you how to eat well and all participants walk away with a recipe. A great combination to your workouts, no?

Flex and Fit will also include a retail center, tea and smoothie bar and art! In addition to opening this beautiful club, Patel is an artist and her art will adorn the walls of FF and she hopes to bring in other artists too. When asked about this concept and why, she simply told me "I knew I needed to do something different". And guess what? She did it and I can't wait to see it in the flesh in May.

Here are a few gift ideas (below) that I sprinkled throughout my post. These would be good for the fitness nut, your bestie who is bored with her current fitness regime, your bro who needs to learn how to cook, man cannot live on pizza alone and anyone that is ready to try something new in the world of fitness and cooking.

Gift ideas

  • fitness class passes- I don't know about you but I'd like to spin through Hawaii!

  • cooking class passes- Learn how to cook healthy in the same place you are trying to exercise to be healthy? Yes, please!

  • Artwork- original artwork is very subjective but a great gift when you know the giftee's style

  • Personal Training sessions for you and your boo- take time out to get fit together!

The Spotlight: Clean Catch Fish Market

Clean Catch Fish Market is a special place located on Selwyn Avenue in Tranquil Court. The name says what it is--but you do have to go inside to understand just what makes this place a true gem in Charlotte. This one of a kind fish market boasts fresh seafood and the customer service was supreme. I came on a slooowww day, Sunday, but picked up a crabcake. Being from the Baltimore area, I was a skeptic. Let me just say, it was the best crabcake I have had in Charlotte...and it rank pretty high overall too.

Clean Catch Fish Market is the place a chef (amateur or professional) would go to pick up the best oysters (or whatever fishy delight you choose) to prepare a gourmet dinner for a special someone and yes...you can give the gift of food!

Bzzz: I heard that Fed-Ex makes deliveries at least once a day, which goes to show how fresh the fish (and scallops, shrimp, etc) are!

The Spotlight: Kendra Studios

Kendra Baird's artwork caught my eye at the NoDa Arts Market. She is a local Charlotte artist who has been in the area for over five years and works on traditional canvas, as well as wood. She has some whimsy pieces but my favorite ones include street scenes and umbrellas. When asked "why umbrellas" Kendra said (and I am paraphrasing) "Its something about how many people can be in the same space but not really see each other because everyone is hidden under their umbrellas". From our conversation, I gathered that umbrellas struck a cord with her audience/fan base and she continued doing more and I am glad she did. They are my favorites and I hope to purchase one soon. Here are a few of her pieces:

Rainy Day #3

Red Light

Rain on Me

The Blues

To purchase art for another takes research. If you know that your giftee has a favorite artist by all means make a purchase. If you are unsure, take in one of the many art crawls in Charlotte or visit a local museum or art school together and pay attention when something catches the eye of the giftee...that's when you will know what piece they would love to hang on their wall.

Sidenote: Mark your calendar for Friday, April 1st. Kendra Baird will have a show at Green Rice Gallery in NoDa.

The Spotlight: HandPicked

You know the store that you always pass by and say that you are going to stop in one day soon? I have a few and this blog helps me to make the effort to just walk on in and see what I find.

Recently, I did that with HandPicked and picked up the cutest bracelet. A friend of mine picked up a nice necklace for her sister too. Both pieces were different and unique. I was told mine was hot off the presses...an item that had just been delivered to the store. I'm sorry that I don't have pics of those purchases but I do have a few that I might have to go back for. They are:

Antique Coral Earrings (on sale for $16.80)

Pearl Cuff ($26.60)
Antique Tear Drop Pendant ($42.00)

These items are also available online via http://www.handpicked.net/. In addition to costume jewelry, Handpicked carries HP Originals (items made in limited quantities and handcrafted), trendy pieces, sterling silver, accessories and can even monogram appropriate jewelry.

These pieces would be great for a girlfriend and Handpicked is definitely guy-friendly. The staff knows their jewelry and were completely nice. Since I stopped in around the holidays I got to see plenty of guys who had no clue what to purchase their significant others but knew that she shopped Handpicked. One guy said he was purchasing a stocking stuffer. Yes, the holidays are over but gifting is all year! Instead of a stocking stuffer, just lay a cute bracelet or ring on her pillow like a chocolate before turn down service:)

Check out the Handpicked story straight from the source...
From the horse's mouth (i.e. their website):
It began as more than a love of fashion, but a passion for the land and people of Mexico. With a desire to bring meaning to her life and a calling to unite the village markets of Mexico and her home country, HandPicked was born. Through her vision, Melanie Mauldin not only built her own family business, but helped build better lives for the families of silversmiths that have created HandPicked treasures for the past 20 years. And, even today, Melanie continues to work to improve the quality of life for women in those villages.
By offering handcrafted sterling silver jewelry that represents value, HandPicked has evolved from home shows and holiday markets to a family-owned chain of stores in three states. Our company's mission is important - provide a fun environment which helps women express who they are or who they want to be.

The Spotlight: Neela bags

I first came across these eco-chic Neela bags at a Skirt! Magazine event. Guests at the event received gift bags and the best giveaway inside was a Neela wine bag...so cute! Since then I have proudly carried their standard market tote on my shoulder (thanks, Tatiana!) and perused their website, which includes all their products, including their signature bag, the Fold-Up Market Tote.

Let me tell you that these bags are a fab way to go green! Colorful designs range from diamondweave to giraffe to damask and more. They also have extra compartments too. For example, my standard market tote has compartments for libations and there's also a side compartment where I can put my keys or gum. Enough about me and my bag! These products would be perfect to nudge someone into going green or for those that have already taken the plunge to save our environment.

While you don't really need a reason to nab a new bag---just to give you some gift for thought:)the recipient could take a her/his new Neela bag to the beach, their next outing to the farmer's market or grocery store. The bags are versatile and at the same time helping the environment.

Here's some additional information about Neela...

From the horse's mouth (i.e. Neela bags website):

At Neela, we believe that by making a few small changes in our daily routines, together we can make a big difference for the environment. We've started with reusable, recyclable bags in brilliant patterns and colors. If you use Neela bags in place of paper or plastic for a year, you can save nearly 1000 bags from certain death in a landfill near you. Join us in making paper and plastic a thing of the past.

I will leave you with this fact: Plastic material being dumped into the ocean is responsible for killing up to a million sea creatures yearly. Don't mean to be Debbie Downer but the facts are the facts!

The Spotlight: Polka Dot Bake Shop

Cupcakes, cupcakes, cupcakes. I HEART You....and if anyone wants to get me a special gift (aka a super delicious treat) I will gladly take a cupcake from Polka Dot Bake Shop...I don't even need a bow. What I do need is a fork...so I can really enjoy. Take a peak at how I eat my favorite cupcake from Polka Dot.
Creme Caramel Cupcake

This cute little space has a few outdoor tables and indoor seats so you can dine in with your cupcakes. I usually take mine to go but to each its own. The staff are funny, cute and always smiling when you enter the door.

Cupcakes are a treat--not your traditional "gift" but could replace the usual cake at a party, be added to a brunch or shared as a nightcap..instead of Cognac.

Fun Facts:
  • The cupcake evolved in the United States in the 19th century.

  • In the beginning, cupcakes were sometimes called "number" cakes, because they were easy to remember by the measurements of ingredients it took to create them.

  • According to the Food Timeline Web, food historians have yet to pinpoint exactly where the name of the cupcake originated.

Anything else you would like to add: Success is open ended not a specific canned destination the biggest thing that you have to do is never give up the vi son even when it is not working because theory and vision are perfect it is just the human factor that has to be adjusted. It took me 10 years to become a known designer, I lost a wife, a house and even went hungry many nights, I cried in between and in the midst of some of my greatest success because they were not financial and I was in distress. I have seen night where I looked at my work on TV and could not afford to eat and I would not change any of it. God gave me a talent and if I have nothing else i will show what God has given me regardless of how much it does or does not pay me. All things have a purpose in our journeys we have to stay in tune with the journeys accept them and work through them with undying faith. When the business is failing hold on that is your baby and it is never going to be perfect but because it may be off at a particular moment you can not through it away, love it it will grow up. Henry Ford went bankrupt 10 times before he made his first car( Think about it).

The Spotlight: The Dating Woman's Workbook

Help! SF looking for SM who is funny, entertaining, trustworthy and loving. Hmmmm… if that is what the SF wants why does she keep coming across losers, cheaters and wimps?

The Dating Woman’s Workbook is a personalized book—for your eyes only— that helps you answer that very question. The sassy workbook allows you to detail your dating habits and instead of being a “self help” it is a “self awareness” book. First you truthfully answer questions about yourself and log your dates, which allows you to identify your dating habits and leads to self awareness. Sounds simple but the workbook really makes you more aware of your love/lust life and according to the author, Brenda Lide, “You are investing in revelations about you, and only you can control what you do with them”!

This would be a good gift for a girlfriend who always wants to know why she keeps choosing the wrong man (be sure she really wants to know before purchasing!) and for women who want to be more aware of their dating habits. Ms. Lide has also authored The Everyday Christian Workbook and is in the planning stages for additional workbooks, including The Constant Dieter's Workbook.

Speaking of Ms. Lide, I was able to ask her a few questions. See below our "photo op" for her responses…
